SHU ART WORKSHOP: A creative space for little artists!

Vila Madalena is one of São Paulo’s artsy neighborhoods and is considered an open air gallery because of the large number of graffiti covered walls found there. This area is one of the world’s main urban art destinations and it’s home to one of the best art workshops for children in the city. Located in a welcoming house, Shu’s Art Workshop has offered for the last 27 years a safe and playful space for kids to learn about art.

A Taiwanese plastic artist named Shu En Ling, who came to Brazil at the age of 14, conducts the workshops. In her classes, she introduces all sorts of artistic expressions and materials, such as drawing, painting, woodwork, mosaic, origami, ceramics, plaster, clay, candles, fabrics, among many others. The workshops are suitable for children ages 3 to 12 and the classes are small, up to eight kids.

To be able to stimulate creativity, Shu does not get attached to techniques, methods or time. In her studio, she introduces the materials and different ways to handle them valuing the child’s experimentation process, rhythm, imagination and artistic expression. “Each kid takes her/his own time to be able to express her/himself through art, I like to make sure parents know it’s a slow process and it depends on the kids interest in art”, she explains.

Enrollment can be done over email or phone, followed by an interview with the parents. It is possible to schedule a free experimental class. The monthly fee is R$550 and all art materials are included. You can choose between weekly lessons or a 3-4 day intensive holiday course. For different options of classes just call Shu who is fluent in Mandarin and Portuguese and is also able to communicate in English, Spanish and Japanese.
