IBIRAPUERA: Culture and art in the park
We have already told you a little about Ibirapuera (the first post was about the park's main points, remember?), and now we’ll talk about art in the park: "Ibira" is also a cultural center where you will find some of the city's main museums, as well as sculptures and several important monuments in the history of modern Brazilian art.
The park also hosts major cultural events, such as outdoor concerts, the São Paulo Art Biennial, the sp-arte and much more.
Museums
Ibirapuera houses three museums with permanent exhibitions: Museu Afro Brasil, the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC). In adition, you can also find the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion and Lucas Nogueira Garcez Pavilion (most commonly known as “Oca”), both designed by the incredible architect Oscar Niemeyer, which present temporary exhibitions and events.
CICCILLO MATARAZZO PAVILION (Biennial Pavilion)
Designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, the building is a true icon of Brazilian modernist architecture, and listed by the Historical Heritage. The Pavilion is the headquarters of the São Paulo Biennial, but is also the stage for many other cultural activities and diverse events - visual arts, film, television, literature and publications, fashion, design, technology, tourism, sports, antiques, food, advertising, architecture and others. SHOWING - Under the title Incerteza viva [Live Uncertainty], the 32nd Biennial of São Paulo seeks to reflect on current living conditions and the tools offered by contemporary art to accept or live with the uncertainty. The exhibition brings together 90 artists and art collectives and more than 300 artworks. "In this moment of uncertainty in the world, art can teach us how to live, pointing out new pathways for biological, material and spiritual transformation," said curator Jochen Volz to Veja São Paulo magazine. MUSEU AFRO BRASIL
Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the museum has about 6,000 artworks focused on african-Brazilian culture. We have alteady written about this important museum in a previous post here in (ITK) we_recommend blog. Check: http://blog.intheknow.com.br/post/24 SHOWING - "Portugal Portuguese": a broad panorama of contemporary Portuguese art and its relations to Africa and Brazil, curated by museum's founder Emanoel Araujo. The exhibition puts together 270 pieces by some of the leading Portuguese artists of today and aims to bring them together with Brazilian cultural universe. MAM
MAM houses about 5,000 works signed by great names of modern and contemporary art and has hosted amazing exhibits. One of the museum's collection icon is "Maman", the famous spider from French artist Louise Bourgeois, first exposed in the 23rd Biennial and at MAM since 1998. Tip: Plan to stop by the museum shop and then have a delicious lunch overlooking the Sculptures Garden at Prêt restaurant inside the museum, a charm! SHOWING - An exhibition of small pieces by Brazilian artist Alfredo Volpi curated by Aracy Amaral and Paulo Portella Filho. No less than 74 pieces from the collection of Ladi Biezus, all in smaller scale used as study drafts before the artist painted his big screens. MAM also presents the exhibition "The womb of the world" curated by Veronica Stigger with 280 selected works by 120 contemporary artists where the body appears as an instrument of expression. OCA
The Pavilhão Gov. Lucas Nogueira Garcez, more commonly known as Oca, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, is an exhibition space with more than 10 thousand m2. It was once home to the Museum of the Air Force of São Paulo and the Folklore Museum. SHOWING - Art of the brick brings works of art made with Lego blocks and has 80 works, between characters and objects created by the American artist Nathan Sawaya. The exhibition also has a play area with colored pieces, lots of fun for the little ones. MAC
The Museum of Contemporary Art is not exactly inside the park, but should not be left out of the script! It is across 23 de Maio Avenue and you can access it by the iron footbridge, direct from the park, leaving by gate 3. Upon arrival, take at look at the permanent exhibition of the collection on the ground floor, organised differently throughout the year, and it's always lovely. SHOWING - “Inventário: arte outra” brings together 34 recent paintings by visual artist Gustavo von Ha, curated by Ana Avelar; "RetroPerspectiva" by Alex Flemming, highlights diversity as a core in the production of this artist from São Paulo. In addition the museum hosts permanent shows "A Casa", a metaphor of the poem “A Casa” by Vinicius de Moraes with works from the museum’s collection distributed not in chronological order, but by the representation of its roles in a possible household functionality; and “Arte da América Latina no Acervo do MAC USP.” *Hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 6pm *To schedule guided tour, contact the educational service of the museum: (11) 2648-0258 or by email edumac@usp.br.

To park your car, you need to leave a Zona Azul card, which is valid for up to 2 hours, or use two, for 4 hours.
Tip: on weekends the park is always full so it gets very difficult to park. We suggest to go by taxi (or Uber) or park the car on any of the Vila Nova Conceição streets crossing Av. República do Líbano, and walk.

PAVILHÃO DA BIENAL
Projetado pelo arquiteto Oscar Niemeyer, o prédio é um verdadeiro ícone da arquitetura modernista brasileira, e tombado pelo Patrimônio Histórico. Durante todo o ano a Bienal é palco de atividades culturais e eventos ligados à economia criativa – artes plásticas, cinema, televisão, literatura e publicações, moda, design, tecnologia, turismo, esportes, antiguidades, gastronomia, propaganda, arquitetura entre outras. EM CARTAZ: 32a Bienal de São Paulo – Pavilhão da Bienal (o mesmo onde acontece a sp-arte) Sob o título Incerteza Viva [Live Uncertainty], a 32a Bienal de São Paulo busca refletir sobre as atuais condições de vida e as ferramentas oferecidas pela arte contemporânea para acolher ou conviver com as incertezas. A exposição reúne 90 artistas e mais de 300 obras. “Nesse momento de total incerteza no mundo, a arte pode nos ensinar a viver, apontando novos caminhos para a transformação biológica, material e espiritual”, disse o curador Jochen Volz à Veja São Paulo. MUSEU AFRO-BRASIL

O MAM abriga 5 mil obras assinadas por grandes nomes da arte moderna e contemporânea e já foi palco de exposições surpreendentes. Um dos ícones do acervo do museu é “Maman”, a famosa aranha da artista plástica francesa Louise Bourgeois, exposta pela primeira vez na 23ª Bienal e no MAM desde 1998. OCA
O edifício da Oca, projetado por Oscar Niemeyer, é um espaço expositivo com mais de 10mil m2 dentro do Parque Ibirapuera. No passado chegou a abrigar o Museu da Aeronáutica de São Paulo e o Museu do Folclore. EM CARTAZ - Art of the brick (Arte dos Blocos/Tijolos) traz obras de arte feitas com blocos de Lego e tem 80 obras, entre personagens e objetos criados pelo artista americano Nathan Sawaya. A exposição finaliza com uma área para brincar e construir com as peças coloridas, passeio ideal para fazer com os pequenos. O MAC não fica exatamente dentro do parque, mas não deve ser deixado de fora do roteiro! Ele mais de 10 mil nomes como . Logo na chegada, a mostra permanente do acervo, organizada de formas e com temáticas diferentes ao longo do ano, já é encantadora. Para estacionar é preciso deixar um cartão zona azul, que vale por até 2 horas, ou dois, que valem por até 4 horas. Ao final do período de estacionamento, é preciso mudar de vaga e deixar um novo cartão para manter o carro estacionado.
Dica: aos finais de semana o parque está sempre muito cheio, e a dificuldade de estacionar é enorme, por isso sugerimos ir de taxi (ou Uber) ou parar o carro em alguma das ruas da Vila Nova Conceição, nas travessas da Av. República do Líbano, e ir caminhando.
